Memorial Rides – Sunday 24th May 2015

FFCranleigh Cycling Club is hosting its second fund raising reliability ride event in memory of Finlay Marriott. This follows our hugely successful inaugural event in 2014.

FF photoSome of you will know Chris Marriott, who was a founder and committee member of Cranleigh Cycling Club. His 9-year old son, Finlay Marriott, tragically died in January 2014, from a rare and inoperable form of brain tumour, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Through Finlay’s Fighters, the group that Chris and his wife, Jude, set up in Finlay’s honour, over £100,000 has so far been raised to fund research, care and treatment via the DIPG charity Abbie’s Army and The Royal Marsden Children’s Unit. Although DIPG is, in Finlay’s doctor’s words “the worst possible tumour in the worst possible place”, it gets less attention than it should as only 40 children each year are diagnosed in the UK. As a consequence, research into effective treatment is desperately under funded. There is currently no hope for children with DIPG; the typical life expectancy from diagnosis is just 12 months. Finlay’s Fighters has done a huge amount over the past year to raise money and help make a difference. With your help we can continue to do so. Last year the club’s reliability ride raised over £1100 for the British Heart Foundation and this year, all proceeds from the ride will be donated to Finlay’s Fighters.

All money raised, after expenses will be donated to Finlay’s Fighters.

On Sunday 24th May 2015 there will be a choice of two rides:

  1. Cranleigh to the Bay Tree Bakery Cafe in Petworth and back (approx 37 miles).
  2. Cranleigh to Shoreham Airport restaurant and back (approx. 70 miles).

All riders will be rewarded with tea, coffee and homemade cakes in the Band Room back at the start point. This event is for all club members, any guests will also be very welcome.

Date & Times

The reliability ride will take place on Sunday, 24th May 2014. Please see the table below for departure times. Please note that we will not hold our usual rides on that Sunday, instead we would like as many club members as possible to take part in this second  reliability ride.

What is a Reliability Ride?

A traditional reliability ride is where you the rider will have suggested routes to a destination and return only. You can ride solo or in groups but there is NO on course support and you are responsible for getting yourself and your bike back to the finish. There are NO course markers or marshals. Hot refreshments are served at the end of the ride. In order to get people arriving back at roughly the same time we will stagger the starts on each ride according to the time in which you believe you will complete the ride. These are the Time Standards. The skill in performing a reliability ride is to arrive back as close as possible to the time standard you have chosen.

Ride Destination Distance Departs From Time Standards (with 1hr stop)
The Petworth Pootle Bay Tree Bakery Cafe at Petworth and return 37 miles 10am 5h 0m / 4h 30m / 4h 0m
The Shoreham Shuffle The Restaurant at Shoreham Airport and return 70 miles 9am 6h 0m / 5h 30m / 5h 0m

Please note that on a reliability ride you don’t have to follow the suggested route. You can make up your own route, which may be shorter or longer. It’s your choice!

All money raised minus expenses will be donated to Finlay’s Fighters.
